Description:On 6/24/47, Ken Arnold flew from Chehalis, WA, on his way to Yakima. Headed toward Mt Rainier, he saw nine peculiarly shaped craft flying in formation at incredible speed. His attempts to contact authorities resulted in front-page news stories that referred for the 1st time to "flying saucers." Watch the Skies! chronicles the arrival & invasion of the UFO myth in popular culture. Peebles details the record of sightings, contacts & abductions over nearly 50 years, among them "The Classics" of 1948, the DC Invasion & the "swamp gas" sightings leading to the Condon Report. Drawing on sources ranging from USAF files to magazines to movies, he shows the ways UFO mania took hold of society. He shows how supposed eye-witness accounts, published in late 40s & early 50s pulps like Amazing Stories & True, led decades later to ravings about underground bases where ETs waited to enslave humanity & about treaties with aliens. On another level, organizations were established to try to induce the USAF to release hard evidence of alien presence. A skeptic with encyclopedic knowledge of UFO lore, he assesses the record involving cattle mutilations, abductions, UFO test flights & the existence of the mach 8 Aurora. He concludes that the flying saucer myth isn't really about spaceships & their angelic or demonic pilots.
