Description:Excerpt from La Belle-Nivernaise Histoire D'un Vieux Bateau Et De Son Equipage: Edited With Introduction, Notes and Vocabulary This little book is the story of the adventures of a canal-boat - the Fair Maid of Nerers' - and of its occupants, who pass their lives in travelling slowly backwards and forwards with cargoes of wood, on the Seine, its tributaries, and their canals, between Paris and the district of the old province of the Nivernais (now mostly included in the departement of the Nievre). Its author, Alphonse Daudet, was born in 1840 at Nimes, down in the south of France. His father was a most unlucky man, and the boy's childhood was poverty-stricken and wretched. He went to school at Lyons: but he was by no means the sort of fellow to get on with other boys, being shy, sensitive, and not too strong; and he played truant a good deal. When he had to earn his living he chose the very worst job possible for his disposition - the miserable post of usher (maitre repetiteur) in a school at Alais. As mighty be expected, he was even more unhappy as an under-master than he had been as a scholar. He was tormented and 'ragged' by his pupils, and gave it up after three years. He always looked back on his scholastic life with horror, and has left many records of it in his books: there is a good deal of personal recollection in the present work, but most of all in the story called 'Little What's his Name' (La Petit Chose, 1868). When he turned his back on the school in 1857, he went to his brother in Paris, and before very long began to make a name as a writer. He was fortunate enough to obtain a secretaryship to the Duc de Morny, a very influential nobleman; and this kept him in bread and butter while he was making his way. The celebrated Lettres de mon Moulin (1866) gained him many readers: they are descriptive of the life of the people in his beloved Provence; they breathe out the very fragrance of the thyme-covered meadows, and glow with the blazing heat of the southern sun.
