There is evidence that the hills of Kumaon have been inhabited by mankind for millennia, and the people of Kumaon today are the descendants of different waves of migration to these hills which took place over centuries. The Armed Forces and the Central Police Organisations have been the major source of employment for the people of Kumaon. The nineteen battalions of the Kumaon Regiment clearly reflects the participation of Kumaoni people in defending the frontiers of India.
