My name's not George: The story of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters : personal reminiscences of Stanley G. Grizzle

Unknown Author
4.9/5 (22443 ratings)
Description:My name's not George was the sleeping car porter's response to being called "George" by some uncaring passengers. It was a demeaning name resented by all porters. Stanley Grizzle worked for twenty year as a sleeping car porter on the Canadian Pacific Railway. His reminiscences tell of the many African-Canadian men who traveled across the country, enduring relentless hours and long separations from their families to hold on to one of the only steady jobs available to them. Aided by A. Philip Randolph, Charles Baldwin and many others, this is the story of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters in Canada and their fight to correct the injustices they faced. It is about this struggle and all those who gave support, including the Ladies Auxiliary, in establishing the first trade union in Canada organized by and for Black men. Grizzle's story provides insight into the lives of the porters: the life they had to lead, along with their families, and the struggle for recognition of the union. Grizzle later became a Judge in the Court of Canadian Citizenship, the first African Canadian in the court's history. He has received many honours, including the Order of Canada, in recognition of his contributions to Canadian society. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
