The Mother and the Maiden Aunt: Letters of Eva and Alice Greene 1909-1912

John E. Barham
4.9/5 (32132 ratings)
Description:These letters were written between 1909 and 1912 by Eva Greene, the Mother, and her sister-in-law Alice, the Maiden Aunt. Alice stayed with Eva, who was only 25 and waiting for the birth of her fifth child after her husband, Edward, returned to Brazil. The letters evoke the deep friendship between the young mother and her older sister in law. Eva returned to Santos in August 1909 and her letters provide a vivid insight into her busy life which included teaching the two older children. She was frequently so busy that letters were written over several days, and usually included the time of day when each piece was written. It is the freshness of her descriptions that makes her letters so fascinating. Alice's letters, besides frequent references to Eva's children, contained news about her own activities and those of her three sisters and two brothers. She wrote about Elizabeth (Betty) Molteno, whom she had met when she arrived in South Africa in 1887 to teach in Port Elizabeth: their relationship was to last until Alice's death. Edward Greene's business commitments required the family to move to England in the summer of 1910. Alice returned to South Africa in April 1912 where she and Betty Molteno remained until 1916. New material, which only became available in 2010, revealed Eva's friendship with the South African author Olive Schreiner, a longstanding friend of Alice and Betty. Alice died in Cornwall in January 1920.We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
