Description:Since prehistoric man first found shelter in Creswell Crags, Nottinghamshire has been influenced by successive waves of settlers. Their echoes can still be found in the county's landscape, from the clearance of the primeval forest to the mysterious hill 'camps', and the grassy mounds that mark the sites of once proud castles. Evidence of medieval farming survives in the open-field village of Laxton and the county boasts a wonderful variety of churches. In addition the twin towers of Southwell Minster are a landmark for miles around, and the rise of the landed gentry is reflected in the county's wide range of great country houses.As Sherwood Forest was reduced to a remnant by a growing acreage of farmland, urban communities, centred on markets, grew up in places like Mansfield, Newark, Retford and Worksop. Nottingham occupied a site of strategic and commercial importance, controlling trade on the Trent and main land routes. A network of roads and, eventually, canals and railways, grew up to serve growing industries--coal mining from the Middle Ages, hand-frame knitting by the 17th century, then lace, centered in Nottingham. In the last century industry grew rapidly in the county. New pits were sunk, followed by more in this century, and urban centres expanded, along with their dormitory suburbs, putting increasing pressure on farmland.The author has used landscape evidence and historical documents to provide a penetrating account of the making of the country's environment. His book is highly readable and will appeal to many who do not usually read history as well as to all local history enthusiasts.
