Excerpt: ... the simplicity of the gospel by eev. andkew P. peabody, D.D. of cambridge, massachusetts After more than half a century's conversance with the various and successive forms of scepticism as to the authenticity of the Gospels, I feel a stronger faith than even that of my unquestioning childhood in these books as a substantially truthful record of the life and mission of Jesus Christ. At the same time I am more than ever profoundly impressed with the simplicity of his method, teachings, and spirit, and with the injury that has been done to Christianity and the vantageground that has been given to sceptics and infidels by the foisting upon it of technical theology. No word has been so much abused or has done so much mischief as doctrine. It is not, properly speaking, a Christian word. It is used, indeed, in our translation of the New Testament, but always as equivalent to a Greek word which means not dogma, but moral teaching. Thus St. Paul tells servants to adorn the doctrine, that is, the teaching of God their Saviour by not stealing from their masters; and I might quote a half-score or more of passages from which it would appear that what we call duties are the doctrines of the New Testament, so that we use only its own language when we term the Sermon on the Mount a summary of Christian doctrine. Indeed, Christianity has no doctrines in our sense of the word, --no technical or formal statements as to the subjects on which Christians have been disputing for these many centuries. The subjects of these disputes form no part of Christ's teaching, nor yet, as it seems to me, of that of either of the sacred writers.
