The painting installation Smoke and Water is a continuation of an ongoing project with the local Wilmington community and over a dozen environmental organizations which addresses the impact of water pollution from coal-fired electric plants. Visualizing the coal ash in the recent Dan River spill, Lindquist transforms toxic swirls into abstract vortices of pulsating color. Lindquist also depicts Sutton Lake near the Cape Fear River where coal ash has deformed the Bluegill, which are fished for sustenance by local residents.
