Description:J.P. Waterman, a recently retired Washington D.C. homicide detective is summoned back to his hometown of Huber Heights, Ohio to lead the investigative detail there by his high-school pal (now chief of the Huber Heights police). He accepts, anticipating a police job much less stressful than the environment in Washington. But two weeks after he is sworn in, he is confronted by a brutal and baffling murder. Dale David Peterson, a landscaper with a two-and-a-quarter million dollar a year landscaaping business has been discovered bludgeoned to death in the foyer of his own home.As the investigation proceeds, what seemed on its face to be a relatively simple case becomes more and more bizarre. The shocks continue even after the killers are finally arrested. Through it all, the main character carries on a romance that leads to his marriage.As the investigation proceeds, four main suspects are identified. Waterman's new love interest is divorced from Wes Blanton, a business partner of the victim who was convicted of embezzling from Peterson. The outgoing Detective Sergeant tips off Waterman that three boys who in 1969 sabotaged a street race that resulted in the death of his older fbrother had recieved prison xentences mostly on the strentgth of the then-teenaged victim. All three had been heard to say they wanted Peterson dead.Then during the processing of the crime scene pornography and other evidence is unearthed indicating that Peterson was a closet homosexual with a taste for young men aged 16 nto 26. Waterman learns frrom his girlfriend's oldest son that a certain boy - the older brother of a friend - had been recently propositioned by Peterson and had been turned down and quit Peterson's employ,. But the interview of this boy elicits the information that he had been forced to facilitate what he thought was to be a robbery but turned out to be a murder.It seems plain that Peterson was slain either in revenge for putting Wes or one of the three 1969 miscreants in the pokey; or for coming on to one of his young employees - quite possibly the boy Waterman and his detectives interviewed. The motive has to be either revenge or hatred of homosexuals, sparked by either Peterson's testimony in one or two criminal cases or his use of one of his employees or some other young man as a sex toy. But the nature of the evidence uncovered points at one suspect who would have to have to have had an unlikely accomplice; or to a couple of others who would look good for the murder but for the fact that in order to commit it they would have to have been involved with others they either hated or coulld not possibly have known.It is only when Detective Joyce Bowers has her curiosity and suspicion aroused and does some checking does the investigation extend to Detroit, Michigan and Bucks County Pennsylvania.
