Broom-Corn Smut (Classic Reprint)

George Perkins Clinton
4.9/5 (20025 ratings)
Description:Excerpt from Broom-Corn Smut In this he mentions the finding of the fungus at Madison, and also states that Sturtevant reports it from New York and Farlow from the District of Columbia, in all three cases on plants raised from imported Chinese seed. Professor Farlow in answer to inquiries concerning the Columbia specimen writes that it was sent to him from the Department of Agriculture at Washington and was taken from sorghum grown in New Jersey in 1882. In 1889 Webber reported the finding of the smut on Millo maize in Nebraska, and in 1890 Failye'r and Willard found the same on several imported varieties grown for the first time at the Kansas Experiment Station. Professor Hitchcock in answer to a letter gives the following plants upon which it has been collected in Kansas: sorghum (early. Amber, Rangoon, Red Liberian, and many unknown varieties), broom-corn, Kafir corn. Though not reported from Ohio so far as can be learned, it probably has occurred there, as considerable broom-corn has been raised in that state.
