Description:The Toltec Mounds research project began in 1976 following the purchase of the Toltec Mounds site (3LN42) by the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism. Located in the Arkansas River Lowland near Little Rock, the site is being developed cooperatively with the Arkansas Archeological Survey responsible for research and interpretation and the Divison of Parks responsible for public facilities and programs. The site is a significant archeological site covering 40 ha and includes 18 mounds and a 1.6 km long embankment. Prior to purchase by the state the site had had little archeological investigation. The Toltec Mounds research project has completed three excavation seasons and initiated a number of auxilliary studies. The cultural pattern present is now recognized as a distinctive culture, termed Plum Bayou, that approximately dates to the period A.D. 500 to 900.
