Education Is Still the Key: Selected Speeches & Essays

Niara Sudarkasa
4.9/5 (24745 ratings)
Description:From the perspective of one of America's leading educators, the 21st Century may be one of unprecedented opportunity for African Americans in a number of vital career fields. For instance, due largely to the vigilance of impassioned Blacks in the 1960s and early '70s, equality of access to education is now a societal norm, and the value of academic "support" services and "special" counseling programs for increasing rates of retention among socio-economically "disadvantaged" students is no longer in doubt. Consequently, the wealth of experience in this area acquired by the 117 Historically Black Colleges & Universities has outfitted a generation of Black professionals and para-professionals with the skills needed to implement the "National Educational Goals 2000" defined by President Bush in 1990. Similarly, an increasing awareness among Black philanthropists of such concrete and promising opportunities for investment of their bounty has the potential of realizing W.E.B.DuBois' dream of the "Talented Tenth". The vision(s) of such historic thinkers as DuBois, Marcus Garvey, Langston Hughes, and Martin Luther King Jr. is already translating itself into a global mission in the form of such institutes as Lincoln University's Center for Public Policy and Diplomacy, which are extending the African American community's global reach even as they prepare our students for international careers. Also, thanks to the courage and insight of such scholars as Ivan Van Sertima, Black people are now highly visible in the curriculum as well as the classroom, and the humanities in general are undergoing a process of "internationalization". Research strides in the professions of anthropology and sociologyare prompting a "grass roots" rediscovery and reclamation of venerable tradition(s) of "African Family/Community Values", while rendering racism an ever more antiquated and atavistic worldview. If recognizing one's challenges, defining one's goals, and assessing one's resources is half the battle, then the African American community has good cause for higher hopes.
