Description:English The history of the early modern opera is described as a series of attempts to connect with ancient Greek tragedy. Already the first experiments in Florence of the late 16th century oriented themselves toward ancient Greek music, in which one saw the example for the natural way of speaking a reasonable musical translation of the texts, which was all the easier because hardly anything about the music was know. From then on there appeared regular attempts to reform the opera in view of its alleged origins in Greek tragedies. These attempts found in the 19th century a high-point in Richard Wagner's idea of "a total work of art." This volume deals with the "antiquity connection" of the German opera after Wagner's death. In three studies the authors show how, on the one hand, a creeping process of emancipation took place in the shadows of the "total work of art" and on the other hand analyzes the grip of antiquity as an example for composers, which has expressed itself most intensely with Carl Orff.German Die Geschichte der neuzeitlichen Oper lässt sich als Kette von Versuchen beschreiben, an die griechische Tragödie anzuknuepfen.
