Taking these words as my text, as it were, in entering upon my work, I have endeavoured so to deal with the materials before me as would best have met the approval of the great master of biographical criticism had he himself been alive to read these volumes. I trust I have printed nothing that is likely to give pain, and especially to any of those, with whose lives, Mr. Hayward's own life was "intertwined."
