He had to rush home from England to crush the rebellion of the Streltsy Czar's guard and punished ruthlessly the mutineers. Over 1,200 of the rebels were tortured and executed (a couple of dozen by his own hand), and Peter ordered that their bodies be publicly exhibited as a warning to future conspirators.Peter I came home another man speaking Russian with the German accent and ordered to call him Great from now on.
