Blessed are they who mourn. Blessed are they who suffer persecution. Detachment from all earthly things, then, the desire of receiving insults,--yea, nothing more than this to imitate and to follow Him, and to fight Satan. The desire of receiving insults is nothing but true humility which consists itself in the love of God, joined to the knowledge of ourselves. And this is our Lord's pure spirit,--Himself, His very self! Oh! we may not, perhaps, be able to attain this spirit and to follow Him perfectly all at once; but we should pray exceedingly.
