Description:Six-Man football first started in 1938 with a handful of teams but very little organization. In 1947, the six-man football visionary A.C. Dawson, coach and principal at Southern Pines High School, brought the attention of the six-man football game to the entire state when he invited the then governor of the State of North Carolina, Gregg Cherry, to attend the Southern Pines Homecoming games with his teams biggest rival of the time and only team to have defeated the "Blue and White", the two-time defending state champions from the Lexington Junior Order. As a result of this event the six-man game was eventually given full sports status by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association. Wilson County joined the game in 1948 with four schools: Elm City, Rock Ridge, Saratoga and Stantonsburg. Lucama and Gardners joined in 1949. In 1954 only Elm City, Rock Ridge, and Stantonsburg remained.
