Description:The San Francisco Trilogy is the story of Larry Kuagmire’s search for fulfillment among the mystics of India and Larry’s almost miraculous influence on those around him.Much of the story is told by Summer Bowls, a hedonistic rock’n’roll journalist, after Larry and he meet at UC Berkeley in 1969, beginning their improbable lifelong friendship.Summer moves to the Haight and becomes a “Zelig” of the seventies during the Cultural Revolution in San Francisco, with Larry finally returning after five years.Other narrators include Puti Dolma, a lusty Tibetan woman refugee who lives as a disciple of Ayn Rand and opens a Tibetan curio shop in the Castro; her brilliant philosophical daughter Tashi, unknowingly fathered by Larry in the Himalayas; Brigitte Wong, a poet from North Beach, who falls in love with Puti; Summer’s girlfriend Ellie, a former member of the Weathermen, though indifferent to Summer, is driven to shameless degradation in S&M sex, including with her guru Dungpa, a nihilistic Tibetan monk. Finally, the poignant Fran, a wounded and mentally ill Viet Nam vet, who vows to protect Brigitte but is unable to stop a violent act which will shake them all.San Francisco, the most metaphysical of cities, is also a god-like character in this urban epic which takes us from the sixties to the present as the characters live, age, sicken, while seeking simplicity, and ultimately lose their minds or die.
