The Best Contemporary Filipino Novelists

Gina Apostol
4.9/5 (28990 ratings)
Description:"We’re talking about excerpts from thirteen—thirteen!—Filipino novels here. I haven’t read all of them thoroughly, but from the ones I’ve read (and will undoubtedly read again), I’ve concluded that Filipinos who spend so much time playing Dota, Tweeting, posting pictures of food on Facebook, or trying to be movie stars, are missing a lot. And that’s just sad. They are missing out on a treasure trove if they don’t read this book. As briefly as I can, here are my initial impressions (be warned, they will either be too generalized or too reductive):Quite a number of Filipino writers in English love verbal, descriptive, and metaphorical excess—but they do it with aplomb. If English was, at first, grafted onto our culture and consciousness by the Americans, it has since grown, and become homegrown, to thrive into an English that is no longer that of Englishmen and Americans. This “Filipino English” is florid with a flourish, wild, colorful, intense, emotional, perhaps exotic and strange to non-Filipino English readers, but surely our own.The excerpts by Gina Apostol, FH Batacan, and Dean Francis Alfar are examples of what I described above. By comparison, the language of Bino Realuyo and Miguel Syjuco are less florid, more sober in tone, but still poetic at turns. It seems that quite a number of these works, if not all of them, are concerned with “Filipino-ness”—they grapple with the history, the idea, the sometimes mundane, sometimes insane inexplicable reality, and the lavish, beautiful fictions of it. Hopefully, in our next Inkcanto, I’ll be able to do these works justice through a longer and worthier discussion of them. Abangan!" from Ramil Digal Gulle, http://www.interaksyon.com/lifestyle/...We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
