Description:On January 12, 2010, at about 5:00 in the afternoon, an earthquake broke apart the city of Port au Prince and stretches of the Haitian landscape, destroying eighty percent of the buildings, killing almost three hundred thousand people, injuring two hundred thousand people and leaving 1.2 million people homeless. Until you walk through that city to see the rubble, the ubiquitous blue tarpaulins of the thousand tent cities erected in any open place salvageable throughout the city, and until you grow close to the survivors and listen to them speak of the shell shock of having survived, the profound philosophical questions that they are forced to ask themselves, and the genius of their resilience, it is hard to understand what has happened in that country. But the call to understand is essential. And this anthology is a response to that call. Poet, Kwame Dawes, during his four trips to Haiti over the ten months following the earthquake, put a call out to Haitian poets for poems written in response to the earthquake.A Bloom of Stones collects the work of more than thirty Haitian poets, many who live in Haiti and others who are part of the large Haitian diaspora. Among this list are some of Haiti’s most celebrated poets as well as many of the country’s as yet unpublished younger poets. The poems offer a complex and sophisticated range of responses to the earthquake – poems about the rupture of love, the shock of sudden disaster, the hunger for more beauty in the world, the shattering of landscapes, and ultimately, poems that explore the incomprehensible nature of our mortality.
