The early poems were originally written in Spanish and have been translated into English. Many of the later poems were crafted in English and translated into Spanish.The reader will find the original poems on the left page and their translations on the right. When a poem covers two or more pages, the translation follows immediately on the first left page. Translations display (trans./trad.) next to the poems’ titles. The poems are not presented in chronological order. They are arranged by theme.The task of translating my poems was not easy. I suffered the predicament of knowing exactly what I meant when I wrote them. I felt an obligation to remain faithful to the meaning, wordplay, syntax, general grammar and choice of words- an almost impossible task in the translation of poems. There is meaning in every letter, word, phrase and punctuation. Consequently, the order of words and fluidity of the translations can read awkwardly. This is the price of fidelity to the original verses. For the most part, I decided on strict fidelity to the original; but where my artistic conscience provoked me to play and stray, I did.I ask that you receive my poems as the product of the many hours stolen from sleep, studies and work. Please judge them with benevolence. Los primeros poemas fueron escritos originalmente en español y han sido traducidos al inglés. Un número considerable de los poemas tardíos fueron escritos en inglés y traducidos al español. El lector encontrará los poemas originales en la página izquierda y sus traducciones en la derecha. Cuando el poema cubre dos o más páginas, la traducción sigue de inmediato en la primera página izquierda. Las traducciones exhiben (trans./trad.) adyacente a los títulos de los poemas. Los poemas no se presentan en orden cronológico. Están organizados por tema. La tarea de traducir mis poemas no fue fácil. Sufrí la desventaja de saber exactamente lo que quise decir cuando los escribí. Sentí la obligación de mantenerme fiel al significado, juego de palabras, sintaxis, gramática general y selección de palabras- una tarea casi imposible en la traducción de poemas. Existe significado en cada letra, palabra, frase y puntuación. Como resultado, el orden de palabras y la fluidez de las traducciones pueden ser algo inusuales. Este es el precio de fidelidad a los versos originales. En gran parte, decidí mantener estricta fidelidad al original; pero donde mi conciencia artística me provocó a jugar y extraviarme, lo hice.
