Description:This publication is an ethnological and cultural historical description of weddings and wedding traditions on the Faroe Islands from c. 1500 and until today. The topic is examined comparatively and the Faroese wedding is placed in a larger context with regards to the society and the history of civilization.The description of the earlier period builds on information from early topographical literature on the Faroe Islands and also from memoirs and archive material on weddings. The recent period is examined on the basis of accounts from now living clergymen. Furthermore, in collaboration with Faroese upper secondary schools, the writer has had new extensive material gathered, such as essays written by the students.The book is lavishly illustrated with pictures from the collection of the Faroese National Museum and pictures borrowed from private individuals.It is the first time that weddings in the Faroe Islands have been examined in a coherent presentation.Jóan Pauli Joensen (b. 1945) is a professor of Ethnology and History of Civilization. He is a fil.dr. in Ethnology from the University of Lund (1975) and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Aarhus. From 1977-1989 he was the curator at Føroyar Fornminnissavn (The Museum of the Faroe Islands). Since 1989 he has been a professor of Ethnology and History of Civilization at the University of the Faroe Islands. In 1998 and 1999 he was a professor of Ethnology at the University of Bergen.
