He is a fil.dr. in Ethnology from the University of Lund (1975) and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Aarhus. From 1977-1989 he was the curator at Føroyar Fornminnissavn (The Museum of the Faroe Islands). Since 1989 he has been a professor of Ethnology and History of Civilization at the University of the Faroe Islands. In 1998 and 1999 he was a professor of Ethnology at the University of Bergen.
