Bahati and Beyond

Ian G. McDonald
4.9/5 (27793 ratings)
Description:Bahati and Beyond. Part two of my Autobiography. Ian G. McDonald Introduction . This book covers my 23 years as a fishing boat owner and trophy winning skipper in the Scottish fishing industry. It covers many amusing and tragic events that befell me and my crew during this period. I became deeply involved in fisheries politics and was a thorn in the side of governments of whatever party as they seemed hellbent on destroying our historic industry. I appeared many times in the national media fighting our corner. On one occasion I even found myself addressing a major committee of the EEC on one serious issue. I left the crumbling industry before I was forced out and started a new chapter of my life in the traditional Scottish Salmon Fishing industry. I spent 7 years operating a coastal salmon fishing company. Once more I became involved in the political fight to keep this industry in existence. We were faced with the greed of the river landowners and their lobby in the upper house who wanted all the salmon for themselves to add value to their estates and river fishing rights. These rights were held by the very same titles as our netsmen held theirs. If things were not so tragic for some it could have been a hilarious comedy. Despite the seriousness of these situations I have tried to keep the book amusing as well as informative. The Corpach incident.Captain Mc Donald the chief lock keeper on the canal came across to see us. He was accompanied by his massive St Bernard dog. The pair were inseparable. He said that he would come down at around 5am when the incoming tide would have reached a level that would enable him to allow us to exit into the sea firth and continue on our way. He was as good as his word and promptly at five in the morning he was calling to us that the sea lock was ready and we could proceed in. Both boats started up. The Misty Isle was first to enter the sea lock and we followed close behind and secured our ropes to maintain position as the water level fell in the dock. As I said earlier, only the sea locks at this time had been converted to hydraulic control and Capt. McDonald, with his massive dog securely fastened to his left wrist, was standing by the hydraulic control box. There had been a snowfall of about 5 inches during the night and he was completely enveloped in his big naval watch-keeping hooded duffel coat along with his heavy boots to ward off the cold. When ready he took his hands from his pockets and took hold of the controls to open the gates and let us leave the confines of the lock. The water level in the lock finally reached sea level and must have been at least 18 feet below the lock top surface. We could not see Capt. McDonald while we were in the lock and he could probably only see the tops of our wheelhouses and masts. As soon as the gates were open wide enough the Misty Isle moved forward closely followed by our boat. In the mean time Jock, my partner in the boat and former navy clearance diver, ran forward to the bow of our boat and tossed a very large ex-naval thunder flash onto the stern of the Misty Isle. Within seconds it detonated with a mighty explosion, the sound being magnified by the confined space of the sealock entrance. We could hear the blast echoing across to Fort William and up Loch Eil reverberating off into the distance. Suddenly we became aware of plaintiffs howls and we looked in the direction of the sound just in time to see Capt. McDonald disappearing around the end of the buildings on the lockside being hauled at great speed on the end of his giant dog's leash, looking like a piece of cloth flapping in the wind in a Giles cartoon. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
