Judge then of his dismay, when the chief demanded angrily why he had not preintimated this dire calamity which had befallen them, in order that it might have been averted. "Thy prophetic powers seem to have been withdrawn," said he, "therefore thy end being fulfilled, it is meet that thou shoulds't die. Piepare thyself to accompany my kinsman to that fearful region from whose boundless limits no wayfarer is permitted to come back." The seer, no doubt, considered this a summary decision, but he knew his judge's relentless disposition, and had learned, that with him remonstrance would be vain and futile, so he submitted to the sentence and its execution with a haughty indifference. The young man was not so determined; as he marched sullen and gloomy to the hateful tree, he cast many a longing lingering look behind, so wistful, that it was evident he was still anxious to compromise his differences with the world; he was loathe to shuffle off this mortal coil in life's best bloom, in the hey-day of his youth; but the seal was set, and alas, he had no friend now with power sufficient to break it.
