The canal was open to traffic about March 15, and during the remainder of the month 179 boats, carrying 16,357 tons, passed through the canal and feeder. Of these only 12 boats, carrying 2,201 tons of miscellaneous cargo, and 33 unloaded boats passed through the entire length of the canal from Bordentown to New Brunswick. In addition 9 boats, carrying anthracite coal, and 1 unloaded boat moved from Trenton to New Brunswick, all returning light. The remainder carried local traffic, largely coal between Trenton and Bordentown. During the early years there was a steady increase in the commerce of the canal. The maximum of traffic and earnings was reached in 1866, when the tonnage carried amounted to 2,857,233, of which 83 per cent was coal. The earnings in that year were $1,294,156.69 and the operating and maintenance expenses $360,513.83, leaving a surplus of $933,642.86. Thereafter the traffic on the canal remained nearly uniform until 1872. Since that year there has been a steady and almost uninterrupted decrease in the tonnage, continuing down to 1917, when only 304,700 gross tons of freight were carried, the smallest tonnage since the earliest years of the canal.
