Shih-shuo Hsin-yü: A New Account of Tales of the World

Unknown Author
4.9/5 (34552 ratings)
Description:The Shih-shuo Hsin-yü of Liu I-ch'ing (403-444) is a collection of anecdotes, short conversations, noteworthy remarks, and personal characterizations attributed to historical personalities who lived in China between about 150 and 420 A.D. This volume presents the first complete translation in English, and the first in any language which incorporates the commentary of Liu Chün (462-521). The commentary adds a wealth of additional material and casts invaluable light on the text through citations from many lost works dating from the third and fourth centuries. The anecdotes themselves, some off which illustrate particular moral and esthetic values of the period, and most of which are very entertaining, are divided into thirty-six chapters, each illustrative of a particular topic, such as administrative ability, literary or conversational skill, parsimoniousness, ostentation, or imperturbability. In his introduction Professor Mather discusses various aspects of the "world" which is represented in the anecdotes and assesses the significance of the work. In addition, he provides explanations, as needed, in notes following each anecdote, and, in appendixes, a glossary of terms with the corresponding Chinese characters, short biographical notices for each of the more than six hundred individuals appearing in the anecdotes, and a bibliography. The work as a whole reveals many details about an important segment of medieval Chinese society, and this translation makes it available to many more scholars and readers than was hitherto possible.Richard B. Mather, chairman of the department of East Asian Languages at the University of Minnesota, was born in Paoting, Hopei, China. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
