Description:Many observers have been stunned at how quickly homosexual marriage has changed from something seen as “wrong,” to something that is a human right and a moral good. How do we know what is true or false, right and wrong? Christians have said that there are three sources of religious authority. The most important source is the Bible, but how the Bible is viewed as an authority on morality varies. Some say the Bible needs to be understood through the lens of past church leaders and their added insights. Others say that the additional stories or insights from inspired individuals should be weighted with the Bible. For Presbyterians, especially, but also for Methodists, Congregationalists, Reformed and Baptists, there has been a scholarly challenge to place their present beliefs in historical continuity with their spiritual ancestors. A key document, The Westminster Confession of 1646, reflects the views of its writers. Therefore, it is important to understand those views and their origin. William Perkins (1558-1602), taught all the scholars who penned that confession. Since William Perkins called the Bible a textbook for all the sciences, this dissertation examines both Perkins’ view of Biblical and whether he practiced his statement regarding the sciences. This work contributes to historical theology and exegesis by showing that one key figure in church history had great respect for the authority of Scripture in all matters to which the Bible speaks. Perkins, like those before him, highly respected the ancient scholars of the church and the ancient classical scholars. However, he did not give them the same authority he gave to the Scriptures. He did, however, look for the “scope,” and the Christological or doctrinal focus of the Bible passage. He did not deny the authority of the Bible in science and geography when he was affirming its “salvific” truth. While he predated modern historical criticism, like Luther and Calvin, he was aware that there were some apparent errors in the text, and sought to resolve them. Therefore, contrary to the opinions of Charles Briggs, Jack Rogers, Donald McKim and Gerald Sheppard, William Perkins' view of the Bible was higher than Medieval Scholastics and similar to modern protestant evangelicals. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
