Description:New Eden, sometime in the future where the planet's government is an uneasy alliance between politicians and powerful corporations. The latest addition to the Federation, New Eden was colonised twenty years ago by corporate miners and members of the New Brethren religious sect. A group of New Brethren followers, men, women and children are discovered dead; locked in a meetinghouse and burnt alive. The verdict is mass suicide. As a routine bureaucratic procedure a team of investigators are sent in comprised of three men who are either inexperienced or indifferent to the task. Reluctantly, spurred on by the lead investigator who appears to be on a New Brethren witch hunt, the team begin the painstaking task of checking all the records. Although they finally think that they have uncovered the reason for the suicides, it is all theory with no hard proof. The truth remains elusive and the discovery of a group of dirty, unkempt and raving men, women and children living in the mountains only add to their confusion. They wind up the investigation and await the return of the space transport. A chance remark over a job offer triggers one of the group to privately pursue the investigation.
