The festivities of the oldest university in Switzerland will extend throughout the year and will be accompanied by exhibitions, conferences and concerts. But 50 years earlier, at the 500th anniversary celebrations, the festive season was characterized by a wide range of events, not least of which were music. The high point was the act of congratulations on July 1, 1960, for which a large-scale celebratory cantata was requested. Benjamin Britten, who ultimately accepted this responsibility, composed the ceremonial work which is to be examined more closely within this proseminar work: The Cantata Academica. Carmen Basilense, Op. 62. Aside from the repetitive historical relevance of the work, there seems to be even more compelling reasons for subjecting a festive cantata to scholarly study. The broad field of "utility music" - a term that also includes Britten's work - has not yet been sufficiently systematically researched by musicologists and is at best up-to-date with regard to bibliographical recording.2 But there are also deficits with regard to the cantata genre: lexicons and reference works are ostensibly limited to their development up to Johann Sebastian Bach, while their function in the 19th and 20th centuries, when the cantata enjoyed a sprawling variety,We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
