Hegel's first American followers: The Ohio Hegelians: John B. Stallo, Peter Kaufmann, Moncure Conway, and August Willich, with key writings

Loyd David Easton
4.9/5 (28646 ratings)
Description:In the decade prior to the Civil War, four Ohioans, J.B Stallo, Peter Kaufmann, Moncure Conway and August Willich championed the philosophy of Hegel. Linked by friendship and attention to each other's views, these first American Hegelians publicised his ideas in books, speeches and articles bearing on public affairs in which they were active as lawyers, publisher, clergyman and labor editor.Easton's book not only illuminates a fascinating period of Ohio history but makes an original contribution to the history of American philosophy. Indeed, as Easton shows, the earliest American Hegelianism highlights aspects of Hegel's thought which are commonly ignored or misrepresented.Stallo particularly showed that Hegel was basically a phenomenalist, rejecting transcendent metaphysics. Stallo, Conway and Willich made it clear that Hegel far from being a static rationalist with a "block universe" was a process-philosopher *par excellence*. The Ohio Hegelians furthermore, held views on the unity of thought and language, the different uses of language and the dialectical kinship of language to reality which paralleled Hegel's position, anticipating developments in current "linguistic philosophy". Indeed Hegel's view of the state was seen by the Ohio Hegelians to include a distinctly liberal element, which provided for individual freedom and could only be realised in democracy. As Easton points out, not only were The Ohio Hegelians the first American followers of Hegel, in contrast to such critics as Theodore Parker, but the work of some of them had a definite impact on Emerson, and their activities antedated and influenced the later St. Louis Hegelian Society. In a valuable appendix, Easton includes some of the key writings of the Ohio Hegelians which are all but inaccessible. Sections of Stallo's General Principles and Kaufmann's temple of truth, as well as Conway's rare essay on "David Friedrich Strauss" and Willich's newspaper articles on "Man, History and Socialism" (here translated for the first time from the German) reveal the extend to which Hegel's ideas were adopted and applied by his first American disciplesWe have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
