Description:Another early Australian story by Abbott.This one is set in 1812 and concerns a red-headed Irishman (what else with a name like O'Shaughnessy) who is sentenced to death for a murder that he didn't commit. He is reprieved at the last minute (while standing on the gallows) and then transported to Sydney. He is sent to Coal River (Newcastle) where he works for the Commandant as his valet. On a trip to Sydney he is introduced to some characters named Lawson, Blacksland and Wentworth who are proposing a trip over the Blue Mountains, and he joins this party and is subsequently rewarded with his freedom. Returns to Coal River as a free man where he helps rescue his lady love from some bushrangers.
