Desperate for money, Frank turns to bounty-hunting, moving hired killers into his home and setting out each week to make his pay. Frank soon turns to drinking, and the only affection he shows Mattie is in an effort to produce children. As time passes, Frank grows more frustrated with Mattie's inability to conceive, and a violent act of drunken lust forces Mattie to make a dangerous decision. She would leave Frank Cole, and try and make a life for herself somewhere far away. But tragedy strikes, and Mattie is once again taken captive, this time by Comanche warriors who've come to take their vengeance on the Texas Ranger and his family. But as she travels the Texas plains, the prisoner of a Comanche brave called Many Eagles, she rediscovers the passion and inner strength she thought had long ago died. And she discovers that love is not about possession, or promises, or submission. She discovers that love is about wild abandon, animal lust, and the willingness to let go of all fear. But men are hunting for Mattie, believing she is an unwilling hostage bound for a brutal and humiliating death. For the first time in her long life, she is free, but her would-be rescuers are set to dash her plans for a new life. With danger lurking around every corner, Mattie begins to be plagued by dreams, nightmares of a cruel and veracious specter.
