YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. Pat Benson looked like being an academic high-flier. In his early exams he had gained one of the top marks in the city and all expected him to end up with a good degree. That, however, was in biology and Pat, being persuaded that biology was a ’girl’s subject’ and having all the usual male image follies, had switched to maths. Incredibly, and more by hard work and luck than ability, he had been accepted into Birmingham University. Even there, his luck had held out – at first. How soon would they be wanting a new maths professor, he’d wondered? He was somewhat prone to illusions of success and glory. But reality soon struck. Even at the end of the first term, he began to have doubts, and by the end of the first year, he was struggling. Then, kind hearted (and very attractive) fellow student, Liz, started to coach him and at last, he’d struggled up to what might have been an acceptable level. But a brief epidemic of stomach upsets during the next end-of-year exams prevented him from displaying his newfound rise to mediocrity and, as his record up to that point had been abysmal, he was sent down – though with the offer of being taken back if he passed the exams next year. But how, without the continued coaching of Liz, could he? He was hopeless at the subject: she would be at university, and he at home. But then came the surprise offer of a job. Look after a house for Liz and four (female) friends, and get all the coaching he needed. He took it, of course. Who would not want to live with the glorious Liz and Ruth, have the alluring Gisela to teach him German, and the kindly medic Janet on hand? But they all, even Liz, turned out to be intimidating companions. But Susan! The kind, beautiful, friendly Susan due to join them a term late! She would be the answer!
