Description:Based on the memoirs of an English dentist and the childhood recollections of his son, this book gives a first hand account of life in Paris in the second half of the nineteenth century. James Heesom worked for Dr Thomas Wiltberger Evans, the first American to be awarded the French Legion of Honour, whose dental practice included most of the crowned heads of Europe. Working as his assistant James came across many interesting people, from the Emperor Napoleon III to aristocrats and politicians. Later in his career James moved to the practice of John d'Oyley-Evans, a would-be French aristocrat who drove around Paris in a nobleman's carriage. Outside his working life James describes his early years in Paris when he visited student restaurants and dance-halls and appeared on stage in a walk-on role in a Paris opera. He was also a witness to the war fever in Paris in 1870 and the aftermath to the siege and Commune.
