He was a flier in the Navy during World War II and spent part of the war as flight deck officer on the USS Fanshaw Bay. After the war, he studied art in Los Angeles and then in Paris, where he lived and worked on the east bank of the Seine and moved in the same circles as Pablo Picasso and photographer Man Ray. He was director of the American Art Study Abroad in Paris from 1959 to 1969. He was also a professor at American College in Paris in the early 1960s. Married for 25 years to printmaker Elizabeth Quandt, he spent those years in Santa Rosa, CA, teaching, sculpting and painting. His final years were spent in the desert city of La Quinta, CA.
