It was the stage actor Charles Hawtrey who brought it to life. He (& to a lesser extent his brother, William) made it famous throughout the world in the theater. Additionally, Charles appeared in the 1913 film adaptation which is considered the 1st British Science Fiction feature film (restored in 2014 by the British Film Institute). Two other films (early 1900s in New Zealand & 1921 in the States) were also made (and a 4th was planned). Meanwhile, numerous non-Hawtrey showings made the theatrical rounds as well.
