He becomes an expert at the morse code and flag signals as a Signalman Third Class on the USS Pasendena. Assigned to protecting carriers his ship battles kamikaze planes, typhoons and amoebic dysentery. He cheered as he watched planes taking off from the carriers but witnessed many coming home crippled and even crashing into the sea before being able to land on the carrier. Sent to assist the Marines landing at Iwo Jima his ship bombarded for 3 days and 3 nights.
