The Providence Oath of Allegiance and Its Signers, 1651-2

Richard LeBaron Bowen
4.9/5 (25245 ratings)
Description:This monograph is an in-depth examination of the historical circumstances surrounding the signing by twelve Providence freemen of a declaration (not a religious oath) that the signers would be true and faithful to the Commonwealth of England, as then established, without king or House of Lords. Roger Williams, the founder of Providence, was in England at that time attempting to obtain the repeal of a commission earlier given to William Coddington to rule Aquidneck Island (including the towns of Portsmouth and Newport) for life. Williams, from Providence, and John Clarke, from Newport, succeeded in obtaining the repeal of the Coddington commission, which resulted in the reinstatement of the 1644 charter for the Colony of Providence Plantations (including the Providence area and Aquidneck Island). After the Restoration, Clarke obtained a new charter for the colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations from King Charles II.A PDF of this book can be obtained on Hathi Trust Digital Library (digitalized by Google). We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
