Description:Ermen and Alyp are from two different clans of the same Oirat tribe roaming the Russian Mongol steppes – (circa late 12th century CE). They meet at Alyp’s groom selection ceremony. Every suitor had to bring 5 horses and participate in a horse race with Alyp who is a good rider and whoever beats Alyp could claim her hand, else leave the horses behind and go home. A number of suitors failed and her parents were getting worried if Alyp would get married at all. With the passage of time her skill and speed of riding the horse was getting better and better and very handsome suitors were getting rejected. Ermen overtakes her in the horse chase and claims her hand. Alyp’s mother has her reservations about the groom. That night Alyp and her mother have a chat in the stillness of the night. Ten years after marriage, Ermen is keen to go to the land of the Indus to learn. Alyp permits him to go. The children are nine and three years old. After a long journey through the silk route Ermen arrives at the ruins of Takshashila. Here he learns the language of the scriptures. For his further education he seeks admission to Nalanda University, a place of learning without borders with the core philosophy of excellence in education both in humanities and the sciences. Many sects of Buddhist practices were followed here. The residential university was famed for its great scholars, faculty, bright students and being well provided for by the administration for its upkeep. It was a matter of prestige for someone to get admitted and study under the scholars. At this point of time in history the invaders from Afghanistan who took control of north India were destroying all symbols of indigenous religions. At one stage, about the time of the visit of Xuan Zang (639 – 642 CE) the university was being maintained by the revenues of 200 villages. Presently the university was finding it difficult to sustain with the revenues shrinking and hence had stopped admissions but seekers could come and learn as day- scholars. Since Ermen displayed the qualities of a genuine seeker or aspirant the abbot permitted him as the last disciple. He studies at Nalanda University for 8 years. At Nalanda, prior to his admission to the University, he is put through a range of questions by the ‘gate keeper’ or dwarapandita famed for his erudite interpretation of the scriptures, in some kind of an entrance examination prevalent there and also goes through a range of experiences with the keeper of the mango garden the beautiful Amba, sought after by princes and the wealthy. During his eight year stay he has learnt the scriptures well and is eminently suitable to be admitted into the order as not just a bhiku but also a guru or lama but his teacher stops short of anointing him. Ermen goes through some difficult moments not able to understand his guru for denying him his due. That apart, Ermen was present at the time of destruction of the university by the forces inimical to indigenous religions in circa 1193 CE and he managed to escape with some rare manuscripts. These manuscripts are translations from Pali to Tibetan – the work of Ermen’s guru, a Tibetan, at Nalanda. Age and ill health prevented the Tibetan scholar to leave for Tibet. Ermen reaches Nygor in Tibet where he hands over the scripts to the head lama who provides him with a guide, horses and food. The head lama was very happy that the venerable Tibetan monk’s effort at Nalanda did not go in vain for it is for the teaching to continue not the teacher. The head lama tells Ermen to send aspiring monks from the steppes to the monastery for learning.Ermen locates his clan in the steppes, established roving monasteries which suited nomad life style, preached and practiced Buddhism and finally the last disciple of Nalanda faded away in the year 1233 CE.We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
