Description:A wounded Scottish soldier returns from the Boer war to his home at a coal-mining village in Lanarkshire, to discover that the girl he left behind is now engaged to the local mine-owner's son. His arrival coincides with a pit strike and he inevitably becomes involved in ensuing clashes with the police and court officers as they attempt to evict the miners' families from their tied homes. On the front line he meets a girl who is the tomboyish opposite of his lost love. She falls pregnant but does not tell him, and supports him when he and others are arrested on various charges relating to the eviction riots. Left alone she leaves the area and finds a job in the city, but eventually ends up destitute in the dreaded Glasgow's Poorhouse. He defends himself successfully in court but, as an injured court officer dies as a result of inflicted injuries, he is made a scapegoat and again arrested, this time for Murder.Whilst incarcerated it emerges that his wounds were not suffered in the most heroic of circumstances, that a black colleague in Africa is facing a firing-squad for a crime he did not commit, and can only be cleared by the testimony of a man now imprisoned on a murder charge.
