Description:“An Account of the Seminole Nation of Indians” is a description of the Seminole people of Florida, dating from the early 1820s. The author, William Hayne Simmons (1784-1870) travelled to Florida. Florida was first settled by Spain in the 16th century. Many of the region’s original indigenous inhabitants seem to have been either killed by European diseases or captured by European slave-raiders. The Seminole nation developed when indigenous people from the Creek Nation, and other Native American tribes, moved into the now uninhabited swampy regions of Florida. They were joined by free and enslaved African-Americans who took refuge in Florida. The latter became known as “Black Seminoles”. In 1819, Spain ceded Florida to the United States. The incursion of American settlers into the Seminoles’ Florida lands resulted in three Seminole wars. The United States government sought to expel the Seminoles from Florida to open their land up for white settlement. As a result of these wars, most Seminoles were moved from Florida to Oklahoma (then Indian Territory).
