Guilty Till Proven Innocent - The Thomas Sophonow Story

Ronald Alexander Malloy
4.9/5 (23080 ratings)
Description:Thomas Sophonow, about whom a W-5 TV Progrm had focussed in 1985 , was held without Bail for 4 years and wrongfully convicted twice of a Dec. 1981 murder of Ideal Donut Shop waitress, Barbara Stoppel working alone. At 8:30 pm she was accosted by a man wearing a Cowboy Hat and forcibly-ushered into the washroom where twine was tightly-wrapped around her neck! She died days later at St. Boniface Hospital. Extensive media coverage resulted hasty-investigation. Thomas Sophonow, several months later was charged with the 16 year old Stoppel murder! Subsequently, based upon "Winnipeg Police Detective Pressure" employing "False Testimony" of a jailhouse informant (conveniently-placed within the same cell as Sophonow), had led to a murder conviction! Sophonow, subsequently, underwent three additional trials - plus a Preliminary Hearing; the first was a mistrial - jury unable to reach a unanimous verdict; second and third trials, (with evidence supplied by some three police & jailhouse confidents) lead to two convictions. Finally, the Supreme Court of Canada - in reviewing the details (containing some striking 39 judicial errors), overturned all convictions. The Manitoba Court of Appeal in overturned his last conviction in Dec. 1985 ordered an acquittal - but - in so doing so as to [block] Sophonow from seeking "Compensation" order that any such acquittal must "first prove his Innocence" thus - the Title of my book "Guilty Till Proven Innocent". Released from prison after 45 months. In 1998, Winnipeg Police Service undertook a re-investigation of the Stoppel murder. On June the 8th, 2000, Winnipeg police announced that DNA testing of evidence had [cleared] Sophonow of the crime, and a suspect had been identified. On Nov. 5, 2001, Manitoba Justice Minister released a report recommending he receive an "ex gratia" payment of $2.6 million Compensation. An Inquiry into Sophonow's case by the Manitoba government began in 2000 - "Thomas Sophonow Inquiry Report" issued in 2001".We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
