Description:Excerpt from Nathan Hale, 1776: Biography and Memorials For the earliest "Life" of Nathan Hale we are indebted to the late Mr. I. W. Stuart, of Hartford, who was fortunately drawn to the subject some fifty years ago, when sufficient material for a beginning was conveniently at hand, and when it was still possible to glean from personal recollections. His work, which appeared in two editions in 1856, has long been out of print, and in the interval our knowledge of Hale has widened. The main source of new information is what we may now describe as Hale's correspondence, only a portion of which fell under the eye of, or was utilized by, Stuart. Limited in amount as this may appear to be, it is more than would be looked for in view of the fate that has befallen so much of the manuscript literature of the Colonial and Revolutionary periods. Of the letters of many another bright spirit of that time not a line remains. In the case of Hale we must deem ourselves happy that at least ten of his own letters have been preserved.
