I know that Mr. Jefferson considered them as property, nor am I aware that they ever have been considered other wise by any one. Mr. Jefferson fixed the price of the post nati at $12 50 cents, which would indicate the belief of the necessity of a compromise between the holder and the public. The letter which I have just read, is dated August, 1814. It appears, then, that in 1770, 1814, 1824, he still deemed abolition indispensable to the safety of the country.
