Proceedings of the Bunker Hill Monument Association at the Annual Meeting, June 17, 1865, Vol. 1: With the President's Address, the Resolutions of the ... of the Anniversary (Classic Reprint)

Bunker Hill Monument Association
4.9/5 (19923 ratings)
Description:Excerpt from Proceedings of the Bunker Hill Monument Association at the Annual Meeting, June 17, 1865, Vol. 1: With the President's Address, the Resolutions of the Corporation, and Other Incidents of the Anniversary A considerable portion of this publication is occupied with commemorative notices of Edward Everett, who was not only one of the founders of this Association, but was the only one of tho original associates who continued his official connection and rendered to it his invaluable services up to tho recent period of his death. It was proper, therefore, that extended notices should be taken of him by the Association on their anniversary, which his eloquence has so signally illustrated. Would that the tribute were worthier! The resolutions in memory of the late President op the United Status and in honor of the present distinguished incumbent were cordially adopted, as expressing not only the united voice of the Association, but of the nation also, in this portentous period of its history. The visit, to Bunker Hill of the National Congregational Council - a body representing a large portion of the people from every part of the country - was an occurrence of such an interesting and opportune character as to render it desirable that a brief account of their exercises should be here given. The fact that the anniversary this year came on the same day of the week, and that tho visit of the Council to the battle-field was at the same hour of the day, that the battle took place, served to heighten the interest of the occasion.
