Description:Excerpt from Australasia, Vol. 2: Malaysia and the Pacific Archipelagoes During the fourteen years that have elapsed since the first issue of this work, geographical exploration has made steady progress, especially in the great islands of Borneo, Celebes, and New Guinea In Borneo Dr. Molengraaff has traced to their sources in the central highlands the four main fluvial arteries - Kayan, Barito, Kapuas, and Mahakkam - while the last named has been descended by Dr. Nieuwenhuis from its upper waters to Tepu at the head of steam navigation. Excellent work has been done, notably by the two cousins Sarasin, in Celebes. Thanks to their extensive surveys, a clear idea may now be formed of the main physical features, orographic and lacustrine systems of that hitherto little known island. But it is in New Guinea that the greatest progress has been made. Here P.E. Mt)olenburgh found that the MacCluer and Geelvink Bay inlets do not communicate, and consequently that the extreme western tract is not an island but a peninsula.
