Recent Studies on Peach Yellows and Little Peach (Classic Reprint)

4.9/5 (29750 ratings)
Description:Excerpt from Recent Studies on Peach Yellows and Little Peach "Peach yellows" and "little peach" are peculiar American diseases of the peach which have been responsible for heavy losses in many localities in this and some other states. They are also said to occur on nectarines, almonds and apricots and the same or very similar diseases attack the plum. The term "yellows" is also applied to many other plants when showing certain peculiar symptoms, more or less similar to the symptoms of peach yellows, but we have no data enabling us to determine whether they are the same or different. The diseases are also supposed to be of the same general character as the mosaic or "calico" diseases of tobacco, the mosaic of tomato and pepper, the mosaic and "leaf roll" of potato and similar troubles on oilier plants. The term "peach yellows" came into use early in the nineteenth century and was used to describe a disease of the peach, which had its origin in the lower part of the Delaware River valley some time during the latter part of the eighteenth century. The importance of the disease was very soon recognized and many methods have been suggested and tried from time to time in order to eradicate or control it. Symptoms similar to those characteristic of yellows may develop as a result of other causes. Therefore, we have reason to believe that many of the early records are incorrect and that many efforts for the eradication or control of the disease have been unknowingly directed at troubles due to other causes.
