In October, 1916, he left Cairo for Arabia, where he trekked in the desert disguised as an Arab, destroying the Turkish Railway. He was awarded the O.B.E., M.C., the Arabian order "El Nahdeh," and twice the "Order of the Nile," and was mentioned in despatches several times. After the War he was with Lord Allenby at the "Residency," Cairo, as Director of the Arab Bureau. In 1921 he had to leave Egypt on account of ill health, arriving in England on March 28th.
