The period of his acquaintance with the world has therefore been too brief to qualify him for the part of your sage adviser; his manner of life has been too much estranged from the din of political contention to furnish him with any of its spirit-stirring themes; and his attention too closely restricted to the sober contemplation of divine things, to enable him to entertain you, at this time, with either the flowers of fancy, the rich treasures of general science, the studied phrases of the dialectician, or the harmonious periods of showy rhetoric.
