Description:Excerpt from Annals of the Chamber of Commerce of San Francisco The Chamber of Commerce of San Francisco, the senior commercial body of the Pacific Coast, is older than the State. It was born of necessity. It made and executed commercial rulings in the feverish period anterior to State organization and those rulings decided commercial issues. At first it was an arbiter. In a short time its scope and field were widened and it dominated the activities of the entire Pacific Coast. San Francisco supplied the funds for coast enterprises and the Chamber helped safeguard the enterprises and promote favorable legislation. It was to the Chamber that every section turned for advice and assistance. It was to the Chamber that the Federal Government looked for guiding facts about Coast conditions. Then, as now, its views were properly valued in Washington. As the years rolled along and the commercial communities of the Coast grew greater and richer and the necessities of commerce multiplied the platform of the Chamber expanded. Every live topic requiring the concerted action of the commercial communities of the Coast, or the individual action of San Francisco, was brought into the Chamber for discussion and treatment. Movements started by the Chamber contributed largely to the splendid California today. In a sense the prosperity of the State rests on foundations laid by the Chamber of Commerce.
